Livability
COMtech. is located in Robeson County, North Carolina in
the vortex of Interstate I-95 (N-S) and I-74 (E-W)
(completion 2006). Robeson County is a rural county in
southeastern North Carolina, part of the SUNBELT area.
It offers moderate temperatures allowing for four
distinct seasons. Picturesque weather is available
during the spring and fall, which permits numerous
outdoor activities. An occasional snowfall blankets the
area, allowing for the building of snowmen and sledding
during the winter.

The southeast region is rich in cultural and historical
attractions with both larger cities and small towns
offering bountiful opportunities for enrichment and
enjoyable experiences. North Carolina’s Southeast also
has 95 fun festivals throughout the year; based on
geography, a holiday, or ethnic theme. The region is
home to many professional and collegiate sports,
including arena football, baseball, basketball, motor
sports and soccer.
The region has 26 public libraries in addition to three
public university libraries and libraries of six private
colleges. In addition, the community colleges and
counties have libraries with over 1,000,000 volumes
available for use.
The southeastern area is served by three major retail
centers with over 2,715,637 square feet and 239 stores,
as well as numerous smaller shopping centers. Most
national chains have stores in the region. All areas
have multiple newspapers, radio stations and television
stations to choose from as well as access to digital
cable.
Cultural
There are over 50 cultural/historical attractions within
a one-hour drive. These include opportunities such as
the Carolina Civic Center in Lumberton (six miles), an
extensive cultural/entertainment program at the Givens
Performing Arts Center at The University of North
Carolina at Pembroke (three miles), Museum of the Cape
Fear (40 miles), Airborne and Special Operations Museum
(40 miles), North Carolina Indian Cultural Center (20
miles) and others.
Healthcare
In
addition to general acute health care, the region has
seventeen hospitals with over 4,000 beds that are able
to provide treatment in specialty areas such as cancer
treatment and heart surgery, all within a one hour drive
from COMtech.
Many of these facilities are also partners with the Duke
Medical Center or The University of North Carolina
Hospital Systems, both only one and one half hours away
from COMtech.
Recreation
Southeast North Carolina provides recreation in a
variety of forms. Activities available in the region’s
eight state parks include: camping, canoeing, fishing,
hiking, jogging, hunting, water-related sports,
swimming, recreational sports, and nature walks.
The coast along southeastern North Carolina offers miles
and miles of shoreline for the water enthusiast and is
home to many natural barrier islands as well. For those
who enjoy water-related recreation, the area has deep
sea and freshwater fishing available along the coast and
in the region's numerous lakes, rivers, and ponds.
Swimming and other water related activities are
available including power boating, sail boating, jet
skiing, water skiing, and parasailing.
For the golf enthusiast, more than 100 championship golf
courses are located in close proximity to the region,
bordered by Pinehurst in the northwest to Myrtle Beach's
Grand Strand in the southeast.
Many tennis courts and clubs, public and private, are
also available throughout the area. There are
opportunities to participate in numerous amateur leagues
including baseball, soccer, and basketball for children
as well as adults.
North Carolina's beautiful mountains offer 250 miles of
the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and 200 miles of the
Appalachian Trail, the wilderness route from Maine to
Georgia. It is a great area for viewing, hiking, or
camping. Nine ski resorts and fifteen popular white
water rivers provide rafting and winter sports
opportunities.
North Carolina's Zoological Park at Asheboro is in close
proximity to the region. It is the world's first
completely natural habitat zoo with animals separated
from the public by natural barriers.

In
addition, COMtech. is less than one mile from the Lumber
River, a natural and scenic river, offering a wide range
of recreational opportunities. By 2009, COMtech
will have a large indoor sports complex on site.
It will have gymnasiums, an Olympic running track, and
other amenities.
Wildlife
Wildlife is abundant in the region and there are fishing
opportunities galore—from numerous small streams and
rivers to salt water fishing and water sports along a
long coastline extending from the Myrtle Beach area
northward to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and
around the numerous rivers that abound in this area.
